Snorkelling in North Halmahera

North Halmahera’s waters are a paradise for snorkelling enthusiasts. Steps in front of Lotus Metita Island, you’ll find an expansive house reef ideal for shore snorkelling. Or join a boat trip to stunning sites like Zum Zum Island or Dodola reef. Our waters are teeming with marine life, from our resident blacktip reef sharks to sea turtles, rays, and various schooling fish.

Snorkellers are welcome to join our dive safaris or take a dedicated snorkelling excursion. Our experienced snorkelling guides excel at spotting marine life and sharing insights about the local marine ecosystem. Guided excursions run at a maximum of four snorkellers per guide, with masks, fins, wetsuits, and life vests available to rent. Water stays a warm 29–30°C year-round, calm most months, though it can turn wavy between December and March.

Safety Standards

Your safety during each dive is our priority

01

Compressor and Nitrox Setup

We run dual Alkin compressors alongside a Renner Nitrox Membrane system. Complimentary Nitrox is provided for all Nitrox-certified divers.

02

Emergency Equipment Onboard

Each boat is prepared with emergency oxygen, comprehensive first aid kits, and marine VHF radios.

03

Emergency Protocols

Primary medical care is available at hospitals in Morotai (basic) and Tobelo (moderate). For serious medical emergencies, evacuation flights can be coordinated out of airports in Morotai and Kao. The nearest hyperbaric chamber is located in Manado. Because of our remote location, valid dive accident insurance is mandatory for all divers. We are a DAN Insurance Partner and can arrange short-term coverage directly on-site if needed.

04

Equipment Standards

Our operations are optimised for recreational backmount configurations, with rental stock of Mares BCDs and regulators serviced annually. All scuba cylinders undergo hydrostatic testing every five years.

05

Guide-to-Diver Ratios

Our standard ratio is a maximum of 4 divers per guide, in line with the group-wide standard across Lotus Divers.

06

Medical / Fitness Requirements

All divers are required to complete and pass the standard PADI medical screening questionnaire prior to in-water activities, helping to ensure the safety and wellbeing of every guest, guide, and dive group. If any conditions are flagged, a physician’s sign-off is mandatory before diving.

07

Other Safety Highlights

Every member of our dive team is trained in Emergency First Response (EFR). We do not conduct decompression diving or diving outside of certification limits. To ensure safety and comfort, a refresher is mandatory for any guest who has not dived for an extended period.
