Experiences and Activities in North Halmahera
Discover Morotai’s Islands, Reefs and Cultural Heritage
The experiences at Lotus Metita Island are shaped by the surrounding sea, nearby islands, and Morotai’s rich history.
Days on the island are unhurried, offering excellent diving and snorkelling, island excursions, and quiet afternoons on private sandbanks. These experiences combine marine exploration with authentic cultural discovery in one of Indonesia’s most remote regions.
The waters surrounding Southwest Morotai offer exceptional snorkelling, with vibrant coral plateaus right on the doorstep of Lotus Metita Island. An extensive house reef stretches directly from the beach, featuring healthy coral formations that become especially striking along the drop-off, where the reef gently slopes into deep blue waters.
Snorkellers can regularly encounter sea turtles, bumphead parrotfish, Napoleon wrasse, and blacktip reef sharks in this rich marine environment.
Guests are welcome to explore independently from the beach, while guided snorkelling trips are also available. Dedicated boat excursions are offered, and snorkellers may also join selected dive trips.
Setting out from Metita, you will cross to Kokoya Island, fabled to be inhabited by the invisible Moro tribe. Here, you can swim, snorkel, and look for reclusive dugongs.
At Zum-Zum Island, you will view the monument of the famous American Five-Star General Douglas MacArthur, who used the island as a base during the 1944 Pacific campaign.
Kolorai Island offers a glimpse into a traditional fishing village known for seaweed and pearl farming.

Your journey continues to Galo-Galo Island, where local artisans preserve traditional weaving and soapmaking techniques.
A final snorkel over the nearby reefs rounds out the day before you head back to Metita.
The day begins with a crossing to Morotai and a short drive to the local market where you will sample traditional snacks and learn about the region’s historic spice trade.
A traditional Bentor (motorcycle taxi) will take you through the streets of Daruba to meet a local WWII aficionado and explore his remarkable private collection.
Back in your air-conditioned vehicle, you will visit a mystical underground spring that once served as General Douglas MacArthur’s bathhouse and the Trikora WWII Museum monuments.
Following a picnic lunch on Army Dock Beach, a historic Allied naval hub, you will take a scenic drive through the rural landscapes of Morotai to Raja Waterfall.
In the pools beneath the cascade, you may enjoy a refreshing dip before returning to the pier for an evening crossing back to Metita.Â
At low tide, a pristine sandy island emerges from the turquoise waters off southwest Morotai. Equipped with lounge chairs, an umbrella, freshly baked pastries, a tropical fruit platter, and a cooler of chilled refreshments, you will enjoy a castaway picnic in complete privacy, returning to Metita as the tide begins to turnÂ
As the midday heat breaks, you will begin a tranquil boat cruise into the scenic waters of the southwest Morotai cluster. Keep an eye out for playful spinner and bottlenose dolphins that often race alongside the boat. There will also be an opportunity for a stand-up paddleboard session.
When the sun begins to dip toward the horizon, you will enjoy the changing colors of the evening sky over chilled drinks and refreshments before a relaxed crossing back to Metita at dusk.
